Instrumental Program

The Rockhampton Southside Catholic Schools’ (RSCS) Ensemble program commenced in 2007 across all three primary schools to provide the opportunity for students to learn musical instruments. All staff are based at The Cathedral College and visit the primary schools on a weekly basis.

Our curriculum centres on the basic components in the process of learning to play an instrument which have been organised into ten areas of learning and skill developments. These include:

  • The Instrument

  • Playing Posture

  • Tone

  • Pitch Repertoire

  • Tuning and Intonation

  • Articulation

  • Terms & Symbols

  • Rhythmic & Melodic Perception

  • Sight Reading

  • Performance (which includes an awareness of stage etiquette)

SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES

LESSONS

Each student receives one half-hour group lesson. Instrumental students also receive one sixty-minute ensemble rehearsal on a weekly basis. Once instrumental students reach the required playing standard, it is compulsory for them to join the appropriate ensemble. This ensures that all students have the opportunity to play in an ensemble appropriate to their musical standard. This emphasises the importance of teamwork.

Voice and Guitars

Vocal and Guitar lessons are available for all students of all ages. Age appropriate performance opportunities are provided.
